The Black Kings Dinner Special menu is curated by a rotating group of Black chefs whose work celebrates the breadth and sophistication of African diaspora cuisine. The five-course format allows the culinary team to tell a story across the evening — beginning with the arrival amuse-bouche, moving through a carefully sequenced progression of flavors, and concluding with a dessert course that pays tribute to the sweet traditions of Black American cooking.

Past menus have featured West African pepper soup adapted for a fine dining context, slow-braised short rib with a jerk-spiced demi-glace, pan-seared Gulf snapper with a crab and corn succotash rooted in Gullah Geechee tradition, and a signature red velvet layer cake served tableside as part of the dessert ceremony. Vegetarian and vegan alternatives are developed with the same level of care and cultural intentionality as the main menu.

The beverage program includes a wine pairing curated by a Black sommelier, alongside signature cocktails developed for the event. For guests who prefer non-alcoholic options, a crafted mocktail program mirrors the flavor profiles of the cocktail menu. All beverages are sourced where possible from Black-owned producers and importers.

Entertainment and Atmosphere

The entertainment program at the Black Kings Dinner Special is a celebration within a celebration. The evening's musical journey typically begins with a jazz quartet during the cocktail reception, shifts to a more formal orchestral arrangement during the dinner service, and builds to a full-band performance during the post-tribute portion of the program.

Spoken word has been a consistent presence at the dinner, with acclaimed poets invited to perform original works written specifically for the event. The Black Kings Dinner Special is designed as a total visual experience. The table décor is developed around an annual theme that reflects the cultural and historical resonances of that year's program. Tables feature custom centerpieces incorporating natural elements, African textiles, and motifs drawn from the honorees' stories. The color palette shifts each year, chosen in consultation with the event's artistic director and the Black Kings program leadership.

The room itself is transformed each year with custom installations. In previous years, these have included a ceiling installation made from draped kente strips that created a canopy of color overhead, framed photographic portraits of past Black Kings honorees lining the entry corridor, and a projection mapping installation that turned the walls of the venue into a visual timeline of Black excellence in New York City.

The event photographer team, drawn from Juneteenth NYC's network of official photographers, documents every moment of the evening with professional precision. Guests can expect a curated gallery delivered within two weeks of the event, and honorees receive a personal archive of their tribute moment as a permanent keepsake.

The Tribute Presentations

Each Black Kings honoree receives a formal tribute presentation that is one of the most moving parts of the evening. The presentation begins with a short documentary film — typically four to six minutes — that traces the honoree's journey, his impact on community and culture, and the testimony of those who know and admire him most. These films are produced by Juneteenth NYC's media team and are among the most watched content the organization shares following the event.

After the film, the honoree is welcomed to the podium by the master of ceremonies and receives remarks from a designated speaker — often a family member, a mentee, or a long-time collaborator. The honoree then speaks, sharing reflections on his journey and his hopes for the community. These speeches have consistently been described by attendees as among the most powerful moments of the entire Juneteenth NYC celebration.

Following the speeches, each honoree receives the Black Kings medal — a custom piece created by a Black artisan jeweler and designed uniquely for that year's program. The medal presentation is followed by a standing ovation from the assembled guests, a moment that guests describe as profoundly moving year after year.

Attending the Black Kings Dinner Special

Attendance at the Black Kings Dinner Special is by ticket or table reservation. Individual tickets and full table packages are available at Black Kings seats and tables. Tables seat ten guests and can be reserved by individuals, corporations, or community organizations wishing to support the program and honor a Black King in their lives.

Dress code is Black Tie. Guests are encouraged to arrive during the cocktail reception hour to allow time for photography, conversation, and the full experience of the evening. Valet and accessible parking arrangements are confirmed in advance with ticket holders.
